Marriage: a fairy tale where every moment leads to happiness and everlasting love. In the article â€Å"What’s Happening to Marriage?† the authors David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead reverse the fairy tale of marriage. The article conveys a different aspect of marriage that marriage is weakening and divorce is on the rise. The authors believe men and women of this time have more struggles when marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The authors’ arguments are well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead claim that in today’s society marriage is becoming more of a trust issue than previously thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: â€Å"...an economic bond of mutual dependency; a social bond supported by the extended family and larger community; and a spiritual bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith† (520). M arriage is becoming more of a â€Å"couples relationship† and losing meaning in society’s culture; therefore, the rate of divorce is increasing causing people to be cautious of marriage. Popenoe and Whitehead use numerous statistics about divorce rate; however, they only examine the women’s point of view. According to the authors, this is not the first time marriage has gone to the dumps and recovered causing the authors to delay on writing marriage’s obituary.
